William Wallace

William (Bill) Wallace is an Associate Director of BIDE and holds a PhD from Boston University . He has more than 15 years of experience consulting on trade, industry and macroeconomics in developing countries. His involvement in development issues began as a rural works Peace Corps volunteer in Togo , West Africa .

He was Chief or Deputy Chief of Party for the highly regarded Indonesian Development Studies Project (DSP) and Indonesian Partnership for Economic Growth (PEG) projects. He is currently Deputy Chief of Party for the Growth through Investment and Trade (GIAT) project. These projects have all been flagship USAID funded multi-Ministry advisory projects. His direct counterparts have included the Deputy Minister for Fiscal and Monetary Affairs at the Planning Agency (Bappenas), the Deputy Minister for Economic Affairs at the Coordinating Minister and the Head of the Fiscal Analysis Agency at the Ministry of Finance. Oversight responsibilities have included consultants working at the Central Bank, and the Statistics Agency. In these positions he has advised senior Indonesian policy makers on Fiscal, Monetary Trade and Industry issues. He has been deeply involved in support of policy analysis and negotiations with the IMF, the World Bank and other donors during Indonesia ’s crisis. Over the course of his tenure he has been extremely successful in working at all levels and especially with staff to develop and institutionalize improved policy analysis. Prior to joining BIDE he worked for The Futures Group where he was responsible for leading teams investigating Japanese and European trade and domestic policy barriers in computers and telecommunications for the Commerce Department among other clients.

He is currently on leave from BIDE and working with the World Bank in Indonesia.
